| Why do I feel so down during winter?
Long winter nights and short, dull winter days can leave many people feeling down. This is because natural sunlight, on entering the eyes, has a direct effect in stimulating the brain to secrete mood enhancing hormones such as melatonin and serotonin. When we do not get enough sunlight, we cannot make enough serotonin and our levels fall below the desired levels the body requires. This can lead to depression, anxiety and lethargy amongst other symptoms. The symptoms associated with these reduced hormone levels are known as Seasonal Affective Disorder otherwise known as SAD.
What can I do to help it?
5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is the immediate precursor of serotonin. This means that 5-HTP produces serotonin and by raising serotonin levels the symptoms of SAD are relieved. Depression, low mood, sleep problems, anxiety, compulsive disorders (including eating disorders), weight gain, restless leg syndrome, migraines, fibromyalgia, and low pain threshold have all been alleviated in those people where low serotonin was evident.
5-HTP Aids in Weight Loss. Another problem many of us experience during winter is an unwelcome increase in weight. Maybe the ultimate weight loss product, 5-HTP promotes earlier feelings of satiety (the feeling of being "full") in your meal. Studies have consistently shown that obese test subjects taking 5-HTP lose weight, experience satiety earlier, and consume fewer carbohydrates.
Studies have shown that 5-HTP may be helpful for those who:
- Are looking to improve overall mood.
- Have difficulty falling asleep
- Are trying to ease the symptoms of Fibromyalgia
- Experience migraines
- Are trying to lose weight
